Chandler Parsley doesn’t mince words: Giving veterans opportunities for meaningful employment after their service ends can save lives.

On average, 22 American veterans die each day by suicide. Parsley believes part of the solution is programs like DOD SkillBridge, a program that provides service members with the opportunity to work at a partnering company, like O’Reilly Auto Parts, during their last 180 days of service.

“Having an immediate path and purpose makes the transition easier,” Chandler said. “It’s extremely important that these companies are actively recruiting former military members.”

Chandler didn’t know about SkillBridge until his command recommended it. “They were very open to using it, and they gave classes about it. I was scrolling through the participating companies when I saw O’Reilly. Without the program, I don’t even know if I would’ve been looking here for a job.”

It seemed like a good fit, because Chandler served in the Marines as an automotive maintenance technician. Also, the company had an opening in its San Antonio distribution center, getting Chandler back home to Texas after serving at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina.

“Getting in with O’Reilly was seamless,” he said. “They responded quickly and we got started on the transition. I enjoy this place a lot. I love the people and the environment. It’s friendly here and I feel well-supported.”

Right now, Chandler is working as an outbound materials handler, but he has his sights set on a supervisory position. “O’Reilly lives by a promote-from-within philosophy, and I’m hoping to work my way up,” he said.

O’Reilly also participates in other military hiring programs, including the Army’s Partnership for Your Success (PaYS) Program, Hiring our Heroes, and the United Service Organizations (USO).

“I would definitely recommend SkillBridge and O’Reilly,” Chandler said. “Come our way and join the team!”
